On Sunday, September 16, 2007, SI Cambodia collaborated with Initiatives for Change Association (ICA) on the third implementation of their Student’s Heart: Students Make Change in Society project at Russian Hospital.

The project’s objective is to provide food to the poor and needy who seem to have been neglected or abandoned by the society in general. On this third project implementation, we provide bread, fried noodle, soup, and fruits to 150 patients who have been infected by HIV/AIDs or Tuberculosis and are staying at Russian Hospital. This project is meant to go beyond just sharing food; it is to share love by showing that there are people who care for other people.
SI Cambodia’s contribution to this project was our sponsor of fruits – oranges and rambutans – and our sending more than 20 members including ex-com representatives to participate in the project. We were also joined by five Japanese friends, former and present participants of the Japanese Goodwill Mission program, as some of our members have been hosting them during their program in Cambodia.

The food project officially started at around 9 AM when we were divided into three groups – one group to prepare food into plates, bowls and buckets; another group to bring food to patients with TB; and another to patients with HIV/AIDs. We worked in a group of three as there are generally three patients in each room. Each team brought three sets food and walked side by side to the patients’ rooms. At the meeting with the patients, each member had a short, friendly talk with them in order to get to know them and provide them encouragement.

The project ended at around 11 AM, when everyone felt a bit tired but happy having done something good for the day and for the society. The most special feeling of the day was probably the feeling of knowing that we have put a smile on someone’s face.
